BS PSYCHOLOGY

The Bachelor of Science in Psychology at DHA Suffa University, Karachi, provides a deep understanding of human behavior and mental processes. Students gain key skills in research and practical application, readying them for diverse careers in psychology.

INTRODUCTION

The Psychology Program offers a unique scheme of study drawn from a broad spectrum of core courses in psychology to allow students to work across conventional boundaries. The program aims at equipping students with requisite critical and creative skills.

In the final undergraduate year, students may think about where they want to end up and dive into the courses that will take them there. The BS Psychology curriculum having the following four streams of elective courses.

1) Clinical Psychology focuses on diagnosing and treating mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, including learning disabilities, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

2) Organizational/Industrial Psychology focuses on increasing workplace productivity and related issues such as the physical and mental well-being of employees.

3) Educational Psychology involves the study of how people learn, including teaching methods, instructional processes, and individual differences in learning.

4) Criminal Psychology focuses on the intentions and behaviors of violent and nonviolent offenders.

BS Psychology Program Goals

BS Psychology has adopted five Program Goals — significant and essential learning that students are expected to achieve and demonstrate by the end of the program. For each goal, learning outcomes are described by which the achievement of these goals can be measured.

1. Knowledge Base

Acquire a strong intellectual foundation in psychological science.

Learning Outcomes
1.1 Students will be able to identify, describe, and contrast the historical foundations, the major theoretical approaches, the range of questions addressed, the research methods used, and the key research findings in the discipline.

2. Application of Psychology

Understand and apply psychological principles to individual, social, and organizational issues.

2.1 Apply psychological concepts, theories, and research findings to real world problems.

3. Research Methods

Understand and apply basic research methods and experimental design principles.

3.1 Identify and describe different research methods used by psychologists.
3.2 Design and carry out a research study to test a hypothesis.

4. Critical Thinking

Respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when possible, the scientific approach to evaluate problems related to behavior and mental processes.

4.1 Analyze and evaluate arguments, findings, and claims about psychological phenomena in the popular media and in the psychological research literature.
4.2 Distinguish among assumptions, emotional appeals, speculations, and defensible evidence.
4.3 Engage in creative thinking by pursuing an original or unusual approach to a problem.

5. Values in Psychology

Act ethically, value empirical evidence, and reflect other values that are underpinnings of psychology as a science.

Learning Outcomes
5.1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of relevant ethical issues, and recognize the necessity of ethical behavior, in all aspects of the science and practice of psychology.
5.2 Follow the APA Code of Ethics in the treatment of human and nonhuman participants in the design, data collection, interpretation, and reporting of psychological research.
5.3 Seek and evaluate scientific evidence for psychological claims.

OPTIONAL:

Valid test scores of NTS (current year) or SAT I (within two years) if appeared. Applicants Submitting NTS or SAT I test scores shall be exempted from taking DSU’s entrance test. However, candidates who do not have good enough NTS or SAT I scores will be advised to appear in the DSU Admissions Test for better chances of securing admission.
