Seminar on “Post COVID 19 Global Supply Chain Crisis”

A joint seminar was held by FPCCI and DHA Suffa University on “Post COVID 19 Global Supply Chain Crisis” on 16th December, 2021 in the Executive Lecture Theater at DHA Suffa University.  The seminar was attended by DSU faculty, staff and Industry representatives.

Ms. Farhat Umar, Director PDC & CSR and Senior Lecturer Supply Chain management kicked off the event by discussing how the Global Supply Chain Crisis unfolded post COVID 19, leading to high inflation rates throughout the world.  She discussed the cascading impact that supply chain disruptions including container shortages, cargo ships traffic jams on sea, truck driver shortages, component delays and port congestion had on the global economy.  She elaborated how after a global recession, the world saw a dip in real GDP in 2020 followed by higher demand of goods with limited supply which has led to global inflation, rising prices of food, brent oil and a rise in inequality throughout the world.  She also discussed how Supply Chains are will become regionalized going forward, and businesses will learn to do Business Continuity Planning to survive similar challenging circumstances.

The chief guest of the event, Mr. Haif Lakhani, Vice President of FPCCI gave a detailed account of how the Pakistani Businessmen managed and mitigated the Supply Chain disruptions.  He explained how Pakistan textile sector has seen a global rise in demand for their products like never before.  Similarly a number of new opportunities have emerged in the wake of COVID- 19, and there are many opportunities for young people as the country steadily moves towards industrialization.

Mr. Naqi Azam, Advisor to VC DHA Suffa University discussed how Disaster Management, Blockchain and Supply Chain management are gaining importance globally.  He moderated a panel discussion where he unveiled exciting new foreign blended Supply Chain Management programs that the University is planning to launch in 2022.  He discussed new opportunities in Supply Chain Management for the young generation.

The Vice Chancellor of DSU, Dr. Afzal Haque gave closing remarks at the seminar.  He summarized the Supply Chain crisis, its impact on Pakistan and the way forward.

Finally, Mr. Tausef Aziz, Convener at FPCCI and founder of Karachi Global Market (KGM) gave a brief introduction to his organization which will give students of Universities in Karachi a chance to market their business ideas to a larger public.  He explained how students can get involved in the initiative.

Leadership in Tech Start-ups – Session by Mr. Farhaj Ahmed & Mr. Zain Mustafa

Under the supervision of Ms. Tehseen Azhar- Director Alumni Relations & Senior Lecturer MS, a guest speaker session was conducted by Mr. Zain Mustafa – CEO Geeks of Kolachi and Mr. Farhaj Ahmed – Assistant Project Manager CEE Solutions Pvt. Ltd. on ‘Leadership in Tech Startups’. The session was conducted at DSU’s Auditorium on Thursday 16th December 2021 for the students of the Leadership course (CS 5a & 5b).

Mr. Zain Mustafa is a DSU alumnus, an ambitious CEO & Programmer with around 5 years’ experience of leading a tech startup that keeps on growing exponentially. Currently, he is also associated with Audi Business Innovation GmbH and Modus Create, Inc. as a Full Stack Developer and Software Engineer, respectively. Mr. Farhaj Ahmed is also a DSU alumnus, having 4+ years of working experience in iOS Native Application Development. Currently, he is associated with CEE Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and DigiPakistan as an Assistant Project Manager and iOS Lead Trainer, respectively. He possesses a passion for teaching and training and has conducted training and workshops at well-reputed universities in Pakistan.

The objective of this session was to give students first-hand knowledge via successful DSU alumni, what they learned during their journey at DSU and how it helped in their transformation of becoming successful leaders of today. The session covered the theoretical and practical aspects of leadership and engaged students via activities that helped them realize their strengths and how they can utilize them to their advantage. It was a well-engaging session where students were thoroughly involved in the Q/A regarding the recent Leadership practices and gained valuable insights about starting and leading their tech startups.

At the end of this highly interactive session, Engr. Prof. Dr. Johar Khurshid Farooqi – Dean EAS addressed the audience and enlightened them with valuable tips from his wealth of experience. Dean EAS then presented certificates of appreciation to Mr. Zain Mustafa and Mr. Farhaj as a token of thanks on behalf of DSU.

QA Awareness Seminars for the Students of Electrical Engineering Department

As per QEC’s practice, a quality assurance awareness seminar was conducted for the first semester students of Electrical Engineering Department by Mr. Asif Gulraiz (QEC Coordinator, EE). Mr. Asif Gulraiz discussed the quality assurance mechanism and the role of students, program mission and objectives, self-assessment of programs, HEC’s self-assessment criteria, the self-assessment model, continuous quality improvement and PDCA. Mr. Asif Gulraiz also emphasized the importance of feedback and survey forms and apprised students of how these forms help maintain quality at program and institutional level. The seminar was kept interactive to encourage participation of students.

Free Medical Camp for DSU Students, Faculty & Staff – Dr. Essa Laboratory

Alumni Relations Office collaborated with its Corporate Partner Dr. Essa Laboratory & Diagnostic Centre to organize a Free Medical Camp for DSU Students, Faculty and Staff on Wednesday 15th December 2021, at DSU’s auditorium. Dr. Essa Laboratory & Diagnostic Centre offered four testing services free of cost, namely Cholesterol, Sugar, (RBS/FBS) or Hemoglobin and Bone Mineral Density (BMD). They also announced a special 40% discount for DSU Fraternity on all routine tests across their branches till 15th January 2022.

Dr. Nadia Farhan Essa – Director Operations Dr. Essa Lab. graced the occasion with her presence and was pleased by the camp arrangements made by the Team Alumni Relations and Dr. Essa Lab’s representatives. She then had a meet-up with Engr. Prof. Dr. Afzal ul Haque – VC DSU and Prof. Dr. Ahmed Saeed Minhas – PVC, DSU in VC Office and was presented a memento by VC DSU as a token of thanks.

A total of 126 people, including DSU’s Students, Faculty and Staff, availed themselves of the free and discounted services offered by Dr. Essa Lab. Among the attendees were Dr. Muhammad Rizwan Tanweer – HOD CS, Engr. Dr. Bizzat Hussain Zaidi – HOD EE, Dr. Usman Ahmed – Coordinator MS, Mr. Abu Huraira – Program Manager BBA, Dr. Sarah Syed Kazmi – Program Manager BS English, Mr. Muhammad Waqas – Program Manager BS Accounting & Finance and Mr. Javed Ali Khan – Manager Finance.

Awaz TV, a local news channel, covered the event and recorded feedback of Ms. Tehseen Azhar – Director Alumni Relations, Faculty and Students for broadcasting via their platform.

Industrial Visit to Ahmed Manufacturing Pvt. Ltd. – Mechanical Engineering Department

An industrial trip to Ahmad Manufacturing (Pvt) Ltd. was arranged for the students of semester V students of Mechanical Engineering department on Thursday & Friday, December 16th & 17th 2021 respectively. Under the supervision of Engr. Hassaan Ahmed Khan and Engr Taha Irshad, the students visited Ahmad Manufacturing where they were able to observe the processes and understand the practical aspects of concepts studied in the course of Manufacturing Processes. Students were divided into groups and a company representative guided them through the whole process of towel manufacturing, where in, the representatives explained each process in detail, from raw material to finished goods to its packaging and labelling.

The trip was a great learning opportunity for students as it helped students relate many concepts studied in the classroom to real settings.

Assertiveness & Criticism in Professional and Personal Life – Session by Ms. Annie Arsalan

Under the supervision of Ms. Tehseen Azhar- Director Alumni Relations & Senior Lecturer MS, a guest speaker session was conducted by Ms.Annie Arsalan -HR Senior Manager – Feroze 1888 Mills Ltd on ‘Assertiveness & Criticism in Professional and Personal Life’. The session was held at DSU’s Executive Lecture Theatre (ELT) on Friday 10th December 2021 for the students of the Professional Development course (BBA VII & VIII). Ms. Annie Arsalan is an SHRM Certified Professional with 13 years of diversified working experience in HR – Training & Development, Supply Chain and Research & Product Development.

She ensured the learning through gamification methodology to make the students understand that how criticism can be converted into positive development and growth. She explained with examples that how assertiveness maintains the right balance in Professional and Personal life and encouraged students to have their Focus RIGHT. It was a well-engaging session where students were thoroughly involved in Q/A regarding recent HR practices and organizational preferences; she helped them gain valuable knowledge from her insightful answers.

At the end of this highly interactive session, Pro-VC – Prof. Dr. Ahmed Saeed Minhas presented a memento as a token of thanks to Ms. Annie Arsalan on behalf of DSU.
